The Crisis so far in early 21st Century has brought the world to it’s knees! Entrepreneurs are looking for a perfect Problem Solving Approach to turn around the business situations.
Most of the businesses, across the world, their operational processes, their supply chain mechanism, quality standards, delivery schedules, health & safety protocols, business continuity planning, and most important, problems and ways to solve problems has been disrupted in an unprecedented way.
The impact on the global economy has become very difficult to measure.
Communities are struggling to follow an adequate Problem Solving Approach to enable capabilities of human potentials and adequate step by step approach which can be understood and implemented by different maturity of an organization.
Hence, here we bring, a new perspective, structured and patented problem solving approach as a thinking way called “Growlity Thinking Approach” for all.
Before moving to understand the same, let us have a look to some similar tools and techniques and their fundamentals:
History of Problem Solving Approaches
1. PDCA (plan–do–check–act or plan–do–check–adjust) is an iterative four-step management method used in business for the control and continuous improvement of processes and products.
It is also known as the Deming circle / cycle / wheel, the Shewhart cycle, the control circle / cycle, or plan–do–study–act (PDSA). Another version of this PDCA cycle is OPDCA.
The added “O” stands for observation or as some versions say: “Observe the current condition.
PDCA was made popular by W. Edwards Deming, who is considered by many to be the father of modern quality control; however, he always referred to it as the “Shewhart cycle”.
Later in Deming’s career, he modified PDCA to “Plan, Do, Study, Act” (PDSA) because he felt that “check” emphasized inspection over analysis.
The PDSA cycle was used to create the model of know-how transfer process, and other models.
2. DMAIC (an acronym for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control) (pronounced də-MAY-ick) refers to a data-driven improvement cycle used for improving, optimizing and stabilizing business processes and designs.
The DMAIC improvement cycle is the core tool used to drive Six Sigma projects. However, DMAIC is not exclusive to Six Sigma and can be used as the framework for other improvement applications.
DMAIC is an abbreviation of the five improvement steps it comprises: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control.
All of the DMAIC process steps are required and always proceed in the given order.
3. A3 problem solving is a structured problem-solving and continuous-improvement approach, first employed at Toyota and typically used by lean manufacturing practitioners.
It provides a simple and strict procedure that guides problem solving by workers. The approach typically uses a single sheet of ISO A3-size paper, which is the source of its name.
The A3 process allows groups of people to actively collaborate on the purpose, goals, and strategy of a project.
It encourages in-depth problem solving throughout the process and adjusting as needed to ensure that the project most accurately meets its intended goal.
4. Eight disciplines problem solving (8Ds) is a method developed at Ford Motor Company used to approach and to resolve problems, typically employed by engineers or other professionals.
Focused on product and process improvement, its purpose is to identify, correct, and eliminate recurring problems.
It establishes a permanent corrective action based on statistical analysis of the problem and on the origin of the problem by determining the root causes.
Although it originally comprised eight stages, or ‘disciplines’, it was later augmented by an initial planning stage.
What is Growlity’s Patented Problem Solving Approach…???
Growlity’s Patented Problem Solving Approach consists of step by step, easy to understand and an orderly manner to find solutions to problems.
This problem-solving techniques are best to use as a philosophy, or as a thinking process, in the areas like manufacturing, service organizations, aerospace, e-commerce & artificial intelligence, telecommunication, computer science, luxury goods craftmanship, engineering, research and development and or to healthcare industries.
The thinking behind Growlity‘s Problem Solving Approach has a slightly different meaning depending on the discipline. For instance, it is a mental process in psychology and a computerized process in computer science.
There are two different types of problems: ill-defined and well-defined; different approaches are used for each. Well-defined problems have specific end goals and clearly expected solutions, while ill-defined problems do not. Well-defined problems allow for more initial planning than ill-defined problems.
This world class thought process is exclusively designed and developed by Mr. Nitin Dumasia, President & CEO of Growlity, Inc. is a patented approach to explore in any situation to overcome.
Solving problems sometimes involves dealing with pragmatics, the way that context contributes to meaning, and semantics, the interpretation of the problem.
The ability to understand what the end goal of the problem is, and what rules could be applied represents the key to solving the problem. And, that is the foundation for Growlity Problem Solving Approach, too. Sometimes the problem requires abstract thinking or coming up with a creative solution, and each coach or facilitator who explore this scientific problem solving approach, always take the entire team being passing through the pain of problem to turn around situation and make everyone’s life easy and comfortable. Here is a video of Growlity’s Patented Problem Solving Approach:
1. Problem Statement
In this Stage, after basic introduction amongst each team members, along with executive sponsors and coach or facilitator of the event, team has to reach to a consensus on the chief undesirable effect their current business is going through.
This does generally comes by focusing on Voice of Customers (VoC), Complaints, not achieved or unattended Objectives or Goals, Process Failures or external issues like Natural Disasters or Global epidemic or pandemic.
The Project Leader does also ensure that what could be the Scope and Boundary of the Event or Tasks during the Problem Solving Duration.
Once of the most important element in this stage to reach out to adequate team composition.
Ideally Growlity coaches suggest a scientific team composition where around 50% of the team members are from the most affected areas from this undesirable effect and rest minds are coming from cross functional divisions associated with them.
When properly coached, any type of project team can be on top of this stage in just 10 mins to 30 mins time and move to next stage towards their Growth with Sustainability.
2. “As-Is” & “To-Be” Map
In this Stage, the project team then start digging around the process steps and activities (including decisions, approvals, waiting, transfers and quality control) and identify all the possible tasks being carried out in the present situation and demonstrate the outcome called “As-Is” Map.
Typically this map consists information like how much time is being taken on which activity now, how is it done, who is doing it, what to do once done, when to start, when to finish, who has to check whether it’s done properly, what if there is no resources, what if there is no manpower, what if there is stoppage or unplanned breakdown, what if there is no information.
Generally, Growlity coaches train project teams during their virtual (online) engagement and showcase them some practical examples, so the motivated project teams, brings up their own creativity and develop their “As-Is” Map with the use of their best possible abilities.
Then, the team is quickly moved to start thinking about an ideal situation, where the value can be created with least possible obstacles and interruptions, and then it gives shape to their “To-Be” Map.
Both these maps can be completed in few hours if the team put their full heart towards the event. This map is also known as Ideal State or Ultimate State Map.
Finally, it seems like the wish or aspirations for all world class business leaders who gets encouragement from this map and tie their shoe less to walk and run on the path to achieve their optimum Growth with Sustainability.
3. Brainstorming
In this Stage, the project team then start digging around the process steps and activities (including decisions, approvals, waiting, transfers and quality control) and identify all the possible tasks being carried out in the present situation and demonstrate the outcome called “As-Is” Map
4. Perform Experiments
In this stage, the team is given time mostly in the range of few hours to couple of days based on the complexity of GAPs to practically explore all the possible solution approaches, studies, audits, changes in processes, product applications, software coding, trying by other staff members, visit to suppliers, travel to customers, changes to on boarding experiencing, learn for new technologies, skip non value added inspections, rearrange layout, hire or fire people required to perform the task in best possible way, switch from one business model to another model or platform, downgrade or upgrade versions of technology, automate to whatever level, connect equipment and instruments with internet wherever possible, move from hard copies to green documentation, move towards plastic free / rubber free / paper less organization, etc.
When the Project Team put their individual hearts in this process of doing experiments on the real place of actions (generally termed in Japanese as “Gemba”), the magic really happens and such magic boost the Buy-In of all important stakeholder with confidence towards the greatest height of Growth with Sustainability.
5. Standard Work
In this stage, Growlity coach facilitates each team members to reflect on the insights they do gain during the interventions so far.
Since, each team members has gone very much in depth for their own personalized deep experience of understanding the problem, reaching to actual root causes and finding ways to solve it also, they generally becomes better process and business leaders, which always increases their personal wisdom to deal with any type of problems which may come in future either in their professional or personal life.
Further, the project team use their learning (typically known as “Hansei”) to develop something called “Standard Work”.
Standard Work is basically a written content organized properly with a sequence of what is to be done, how it is to be done, by who it should be done, and in how much time it is to be performed to achieve best level of productivity out of it.
This documented information becomes to guiding principles for such process till the time it is not customized for next round of Growth with Sustainability.
6. Align the “True North”
In this stage, the entire project team is given opportunity to celebrate their success which they have striven through the amazing journey of problem solving. We have seen many times that generally the entire team is sponsored by top management of the organization to go out and enjoy as per their wish. This depends on size of success and nature of capabilities they developed during the entire intervention.
Growlity coaches always take pride on the world class breakthroughs being achieved by any type of team, whether they are coming from manufacturing background of from service organization, small or mid size company or multi national corporations, local or global, start up or fortune list of companies.
This brings also the opportunities to replicate the outcomes to other areas, processes, plants, geographies and remaining extended value streams.
90% of the clients of Growlity, Inc. have come back to the coaches and facilitators to seek their services again for their various other areas of operations, supply chain, marketing, supply chain, sales and vendor or technology management to also pour in the same thread of Growth with Sustainability.
